Why We Love Indoor-Outdoor Rugs
Versatility and durability in abundance without sacrificing on style. Here, why we love the rug that does it all.

Making product is something we have gained a love and passion for since launching McGee & Co. in 2016. Over here at Studio McGee we spend a lot of time talking about all the pretty parts, from past project tours to styling tips for finishing off the design of a space. However, every once in a while, we like to take a dive deep into the nitty-gritty design details, like all the reasons why we love utilizing an indoor-outdoor rug in as many spaces as we can.
Why indoor-outdoor rugs are wonderful for the outdoors is obvious—they’re the most durable of options, they stand up to fading from the sun, and they make your outdoor living space feel finished. But as the name suggests, they’re also great for styling indoor spaces. While you may be hesitant to bring something inside that is made to withstand the wear and tear brought on from the elements, we promise there is a time and place for the decision. Here, all the reasons why we love indoor-outdoor rugs.

No. 01 | The Material
Our indoor-outdoor rugs at McGee & Co. are made of PET fiber, which is short for polyester fiber. This type of fabric construction is made from PET chips, which are composed of new or recycled plastics that are reconstituted into yarn and then woven by hand just like indoor rugs. All of our outdoor rugs are flat-woven, plus, a lot of the designs are reversible.

No. 02 | The Durability
Our McGee & Co. indoor-outdoor rugs can be outside in all different types of weather with very minimal wear and tear. The main wear will be in color—slight color fading will occur in direct sunlight—so it’s good to rotate or flip them seasonally or bring them inside during the winter months. Our indoor-outdoor rugs are also water and mold resistant. They can be left out in the rain all year, but it’s best if they are not left in standing water.

No. 03 | The Maintenance
McGee & Co.’s indoor-outdoor rugs are best cleaned by a good vacuuming to remove debris. For stains, it’s best to spot treat them. The great thing about outdoor rugs is they can be cleaned with mild soap and water; you can hose them down if they’re outside or clean them in the shower. Hang them to dry thoroughly afterward.

No. 04 | The Versatility
Indoor-outdoor rugs are great options for kitchens, entries, or other high traffic areas since they are easy to clean but are as soft as regular wool indoor rugs. Plus, spilled food or mud from shoes can be easily wiped away so you won’t ruin your investment. And don’t worry, the way the plastic is processed keeps a soft touch, roughly the same texture and hand feel as wool. Sometimes we can’t even tell the difference between the indoor and outdoor rugs when we review them in the studio.
